Abstract In England, as in most developed countries, rates of obesity are rising in children. In boys and girls aged 2–10 years, rates of obesity increased from 10% in 1995 to 17% in 2005. A further 16% of boys and 12% of girls were overweight in 2005. Tackling childhood obesity is a Government priority. The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is one element of the Government’s work programme on childhood obesity, and is operated jointly by the Department of Health (DH) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). Every year, as part of the NCMP, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) are required to weigh and measure children in Reception and Year 6 during the school year. The measurement programme in Norfolk is carried out in partnership between the PCTs, schools and Childrens Services and children are measured in schools by small teams of trained NHS staff. A minimum of 80% coverage of eligible children was required in 2006/07 and parents can withdraw their consent for their child to be measured. From the height and weight data, the proportion of children who are overweight or obese is calculated and this information is used to inform local planning and delivery of services for children; and gather population-level surveillance data to allow analysis of trends in growth patterns and obesity.
